3 Things Every Sitter Should Know

A 2.5-month house sit sparked a really interesting conversation in our Facebook group this week.

Someone who had just been offered the sit asked some questions about taking time away during a longer commitment, and whether homeowners might have someone local who could help if needed.

The discussion was particularly interesting because many experienced sitters said these were things they’d never really thought to ask about.

They simply understood that when you accept a sit, the pets and home come first.

But whether you’re preparing for your first weekend sit or thinking about taking on a summer-long adventure, there’s a useful lesson here:

The longer or more complex the sit, the more important it is to understand exactly what you’re committing to.

Here are three things worth thinking about.

1. Know what you’re signing up for

A long house sit can be an incredible opportunity to experience somewhere at a much slower pace.

But before you accept, make sure the reality of the sit works for you.

How much time do the pets need? Are there particular routines? Are you expected to be home most of the time? Will you be working remotely alongside the sit?

The more you understand upfront, the easier it is to decide whether it’s genuinely the right fit.

2. Discuss the grey areas before you agree

This is where good communication makes such a difference.

If you’re wondering about something – whether it’s having visitors, working unusual hours, being away for an afternoon or what happens in an emergency – ask before you accept the sit.

Don’t assume the homeowner will be fine with it.

And don’t assume they won’t.

Everyone has different expectations, and it’s much easier to have those conversations before the keys are handed over.

3. Remember what a house sit actually is

This is probably the biggest lesson.

A house sit can give you the opportunity to stay somewhere amazing, explore a new area and experience a different way of living.

But the free accommodation is not the main exchange.

You’re there to care for someone’s home and pets.

Once that’s clear, everything else becomes much easier to navigate.

You can still enjoy the local area. You can still have adventures. And on some sits, you may have plenty of flexibility.

But the best experiences happen when everyone understands the arrangement and agrees on what works before the sit begins.
