Hi Reader
An interesting topic we came across online this week was kicked off by a fellow Aussie preparing to move to London, UK.
They asked whether house sitting was a good way to explore different neighbourhoods while looking for a job and somewhere permanent to live.
At first, it sounded like a great idea. Free accommodation, local insight and time to settle into a new city without rushing into a lease.
But the more I read the discussion, the more I realised there was an important distinction that every future house sitter, or potential expat for that matter, should understand.
🏡House sitting isn’t just free accommodation
It’s easy to look at house sitting as a clever way to save money while relocating.
And yes, it can help you experience different neighbourhoods before deciding where you’d like to live.
But the majority of house sits come with one non-negotiable responsibility: caring for someone else’s pets. More often than not, that is the primary reason you’re there.
🚕Be realistic about how you’ll spend your days
If you’re planning to attend job interviews, rental inspections, networking events or spend long days exploring a new city, ask yourself one simple question:
Can I still give these pets the time and routine I’ve promised?
For many dogs, and even some cats, the answer may be no. They rely on you being present, not treating the sit as a base while you’re out all day.
🐾The best house sits happen when the pets come first
That doesn’t mean you can’t relocate and house sit successfully.
Many people do exactly that, particularly if they’re already working remotely, taking a career break or moving at a slower pace.
The difference is that they plan their relocation around the pets, not the other way around.
For us, that’s the real takeaway from this week’s discussion.
House sitting isn’t simply a way to save on accommodation. It’s an exchange built on trust.
If you’re able to honour that commitment, it can be one of the most rewarding ways to experience a new place. If not, it’s probably better to wait until you’re properly settled before applying.
